Going Stir Crazy?
Why not stir things up some more with a can of paint?
It’s safe to say we’re all going a little bit stir crazy these days. Why not stir things up some more? Perhaps with a can of paint?
Paint is one of the easiest ways to transform the look of a space. Frankly, it’s probably one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh a room as well! Whether it’s time to add that accent wall you’ve been contemplating, reset the entire color story in a room, or add a spark with painted furniture or contrasting finishes, there are many things to consider when selecting your color of choice.
To Be Or Not To Be
Is the object your painting going to be the focal point in the room, or will it support a focal point that already exists? If your goal is to create a focal point, think contrast. Sometimes, the color itself becomes the central design element, like when you paint an accent wall. In other instances, you can use a contrasting color to create a dynamic backdrop for the center of attention, like a sentimental or dramatic piece of art.
Watch Your Tone
Color creates feelings and emotions. When selecting a color palette for your space, spend some time contemplating how you want to feel in that space. Calm and relaxed? Inspired and dynamic? Quiet and uninterrupted? You get it. Color sets the mood. So, after you decide how you want to feel in that room, you can select your color palette accordingly.
Fear Not
Don’t be afraid of going bold with your color choice. In all sincerity—its only paint. You can change it if you don’t like it! Contrary to popular belief, painting an area dark—even a small space—does not mean it will feel smaller. Think about how vast the night sky can feel. As dark as it is, you’re probably not using the word small to describe it. Depending on the desired look, dark colors can be incredibly dramatic. You can brighten up the space with accessories and lighting.
The Finish Factor
Often overlooked, the paint finish—or sheen—can dynamically impact a wall or object’s overall appearance. If you’re not sure where to start, begin with matte on your walls and increase the level of sheen as the need for washability and durability increases. Matte finishes appear soft and inviting, while shinier finishes are more reflective and can appear commercial. When it comes to your cabinets, trim, and furniture, a higher sheen can create interest and drama.
Whatever project you are contemplating, roll up your sleeves, whip out your paintbrush, and go a little stir crazy. Remember, it’s just paint!
